All About Shawn

Photo Photo

I was born in North Carolina, USA, on August 23, 1975, and have dual UK/US citizenship (American mother, British father). After a brief stay in Missouri, we moved to England while I was still very young, first to Morcambe in Lancashire, and then to Market Drayton in Shropshire, where I grew up. After many years in Brighton, I moved to Seattle in 2005.

My family consists of two parents, John Hargreaves (a freelance writer and press officer for the local council) and Nancy Stewart (a teacher and shiatsu practitioner), plus three younger siblings, Leighton, Josie, and Ben.

I play guitar (mostly classical), percussion, keyboards, and sing baritone. I spend a lot of time writing and recording music in my home studio, including the menu tune for the MotoGP games. My musical tastes are all over the place, from Mike Keneally, King Crimson, and Janes Addiction, to Miles Davis, Susheela Raman, Jaga Jazzist, and the Afro Celt Sound System.

I am a voracious reader, and eat through an entire clutch of library books every week. Usually science fiction and fantasy, but I'll read anything if I'm desperate enough, to feed my addiction :-) My list of essential, must-read books includes the Ender series by Orson Scott Card, the Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons, David Zindell's Neverness books, A Fire Upon the Deep, by Vernor Vinge, and anything by Steven Donaldson (eg. the Thomas Covenant novels, Mordant's Need, and the Gap series).

I love hiking in remote, mountainous parts of the world, and am currently busy exploring my new neighbours, Mount Rainier and the Cascades. I also enjoy sailing, having spent two summers crewing a 41' schooner from Cornwall to Spain and back when I was 14 and 15, but it is a long time since I've been in a boat. One of my longterm ambitions is to take a year off work and sail around the world.
